How to win at Categorico

By Categorico ยท updated July 26, 2026

Categorico is a game of knowledge, speed and composure. Knowledge - which word fits which category. Speed - typing before the clock or the opponent beats you. Composure - not freezing on a hard letter. Here is what you need to level up.

1. Prep the hard letters in advance

A handful of letters open very few words: Q, U, V, Y and Z. If one of them comes up and you have nothing, you lose the round. The fix is to prepare one answer for each broad category, for each of these letters:

  • Q - Qatar (country), Quail (animal), Quince (plant), Quarterback (profession).
  • U - Uganda (country), Uakari (animal), Umbrella (object), Usher (profession).
  • V - Vietnam (country), Vulture (animal), Violet (plant), Vet (profession).
  • Z - Zambia (country), Zebra (animal), Zucchini (plant), Zookeeper (profession).

2. Prioritize the broad categories

Not all categories are equal. City and food are very broad, and you will almost always find an answer. In contrast, famous person and movie ask you to recall specific names. In quick mode, if you are stuck on a narrow category, move on fast.

3. Word length does not matter

In quick mode every correct answer is worth 10 points, regardless of length - "Ox" scores the same as "Orangutan". Always go for the shortest word that comes to mind. It types fast and leaves time for the next round.

4. In a 1v1, look for the original answer

When you play against friends in real time, an answer only you gave is worth 10 points, and one the opponent also gave is worth 5 each. Fill every category with a safe answer first, then, if time is left, swap the predictable ones for something more original.

5. Not sure? Try anyway

In quick mode there is no penalty for a wrong answer. Even if you are only 60% sure - submit it. If it is right, you earn points and seconds. If not, you move on without paying anything.

6. Learn the category boundaries

Each category accepts some answers and rejects others. Knowing the boundaries saves precious time on the clock. The tour of all 12 categories sums up what counts and what does not for each one.

7. Practice in solo, win in 1v1

The best way to improve at 1v1 matches is to practice in solo mode. Every run is 60 seconds of training on typing speed, thinking under pressure, and pulling words from memory - a genuine brain workout.
